The commemoration begins at 8 a.m. at Quai des Etats Unis, in Place du 8 mai, where wreaths will be laid in the presence of the Mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi, and the Prefect of Alpes-Maritimes, Hugues Moutouh. Subsequently, at 8:45 a.m., a ceremony will be held at the nearby Monument aux Morts in Rauba Capeù.

This day is significant for France as it marks the victory of the Allies over Nazi Germany and the end of the Second World War in Europe. The signing of the German surrender took place on May 7, 1945, at 2:41 a.m. in Reims, and hostilities ceased at 11:01 p.m. on May 8th. The official announcement of the end of hostilities was made at 3:00 p.m. on the same day.

May 8th remains a symbolic date, celebrated throughout France.
