From December 2 to 6, the Principality of Monaco took part in Rome, as an observer, in the work of the 176th session of the Council of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
During this session, a series of decisions were adopted by consensus concerning the alarming situation in Gaza, where the entire population is facing acute food insecurity, and the consequences of the war in Ukraine on global food insecurity. The FAO is striving to address these challenges by carrying out actions aimed at strengthening the resilience of local food systems. The FAO Council also unanimously adopted a set of measures regarding FAO’s emergency interventions in crisis contexts, particularly in Lebanon, where the deterioration of the agricultural situation and food security remains deeply concerning according to the latest data.
As part of the commemoration of the FAO’s 80th anniversary and following the institutional renewal proposals submitted by the General Directorate in this context, the Council agreed to organize informal consultations in the first quarter of 2025 on organizational reform issues, in which Monaco will participate, in preparation for the upcoming session and the 44th FAO Conference to be held next summer.
The Principality has joined several European Union declarations on issues related to the global food and agriculture situation, as well as the current and future activities of the FAO.
For the record, the FAO Council, consisting of 49 rotating members, acts as the executive body of the Organization.
