Since October 20, a delegation from the Principality of Monaco, composed of representatives from the Department of External Relations and Cooperation and the Directorate of the Environment, has been actively participating in the 16th Conference of the Parties (COP 16) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), which is being held in Cali, Colombia, until November 1.

The primary goal of COP 16 is to assess the progress in implementing the Kunming-Montreal Global Framework for Biodiversity, adopted in 2022, with ambitious objectives to reverse biodiversity loss by 2030, including:

  • Protecting 30% of land and oceans by 2030.
  • Restoring 30% of degraded ecosystems.
  • Reducing the introduction of invasive alien species by half.
  • Reducing pressures on biodiversity, including pollution, and promoting sustainable natural resource management.

During these sessions, countries report on their national policies implemented to achieve these goals and agree on financing mechanisms and resource mobilization to support conservation efforts, particularly in developing countries.

Throughout COP 16, the Principality of Monaco reaffirms its commitment to biodiversity conservation and its dedication to contributing to the international effort to achieve the objectives of the Global Framework.

This commitment is underscored at the highest level by the presence of Ms. CARON-DAGIONI, Minister of Equipment, Environment, and Urban Planning. In her speeches alongside representatives from 195 countries, including 115 ministers, she highlights the Government’s actions in implementing the Global Biodiversity Framework within Monaco. She emphasizes the recent updates to the National Biodiversity Strategy, whose actions now align with the Framework’s objectives, in line with the commitments of H.S.H. Prince Albert II on the international stage, particularly regarding the Sustainable Development Goals.
