Mrs. Isabelle BERRO-AMADEÏ, Government Counselor-Minister of External Relations and Cooperation, spoke during the 55th session of the UN Human Rights Council through a speech broadcasted on February 27, 2024. On this occasion, Mrs. BERRO-AMADEÏ first reaffirmed the Principality’s commitment to the values and ideals of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which celebrated its 75th anniversary last year. The Counselor-Minister then addressed several very concerning situations, including those in the Middle East, Ukraine, and Sudan. She also discussed the environmental and climate crisis that seriously threatens the full realization of human rights worldwide. For several years, Monaco has been supporting the work of the UN Special Rapporteur for the right to a safe, clean, healthy, and sustainable environment. The Counselor-Minister concluded by reaffirming the urgent need to promote and defend the ideals of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Monaco’s unwavering attachment to the Human Rights Council.

The Human Rights Council, a subsidiary body of the United Nations General Assembly, is the main UN forum responsible for the promotion and protection of human rights. It is based in Geneva and consists of 47 states elected by the General Assembly for a period of 3 years. The 55th session takes place from February 26 to April 5, 2024.
