MEDIEVAL AUGUST AT THE ANCIENT COLLECTION OF THE APROSIANA LIBRARY

On the occasion of the inaugural day of the historical reenactments of the 2024 edition of “Medieval August,” dedicated to the Doria and Grimaldi families, on Friday, August 2 at 5:00 PM, the volume “The Doria of Dolceacqua and the Grimaldi of Monaco. Five Hundredth Anniversary of the Loyalty Pact of November 3, 1523,” published by the International Institute of Ligurian Studies in collaboration with the Municipality of Dolceacqua, will be presented at the Ancient Collection of the Aprosiana Library in Ventimiglia Alta.

In addition to the curator of the work, Alessandro Carassale, the Mayor of Ventimiglia Flavio Di Muro, the Ventimiglia Cultural Assessor Serena Calcopietro, the Mayor of Dolceacqua Fulvio Gazzola, and Dr. Daniela Gandolfi of the International Institute of Ligurian Studies, conservator of the “Girolamo Rossi” Civic Archaeological Museum of Ventimiglia, will participate in the presentation. Beatrice Palmero, historian and archivist, director of the magazine “Intemelion,” will dialogue with the curator of the work, promoted on the occasion of the twinning between the Municipality of Dolceacqua and the Principality of Monaco, and with the present authors.

The Ancient Collection hall will also be open to the public with two extraordinary evening openings from 7 PM to 11 PM on Friday, August 2 and Saturday, August 3, featuring an exhibition of ancient books.

The bilingual work, curated by Alessandro Carassale, presents over 240 pages of various works by French and Italian scholars and researchers (Yves Giraudon, Thomas Fouilleron, Paolo Calcagno, Luca Lo Basso, Emiliano Beri, Franck Vigliani, Alessandro Carassale), created on the occasion of the anniversary of the signing of the loyalty charter on November 5, 1523, a year that for a brief period, due to a tragic event, linked the communities of Dolceacqua and the Val Nervia to the Principality of Monaco, involving the two great Genoese families of the Doria and the Grimaldi. Among the prefaces to the volume is that of Prince Albert II of Monaco.
