On Sunday, August 25, 2024, Antibes will be the only city in the Alpes-Maritimes and one of the 12 French cities to host the Paralympic Flame Games.
Tony Estanguet, president of the organizing committee for the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, emphasized the significance of this event: “It is a city that, on one hand, is magnificent and very sporty, but also legitimate and committed to changing the perception of disability. We did not present applications as we did for the Olympic torch relay. We relied on the departments that proposed the Olympic torch passage and the French Paralympic and Sports Committee to identify the territories that host this Paralympic flame, because they have accessible Paralympic infrastructures and a commitment to the development of Paralympic sports. Antibes ticks all these boxes.”
The 12 Paralympic flames, including the one from Antibes, will converge in Place de la Concorde in Paris for the opening ceremony on August 28.
During the visit to Antibes, the city will be enlivened by a 2 km Paralympic relay. On the occasion of the “Festival of the Flame” at Pré des Pêcheurs, there will be activities with sports demonstrations, featuring athletes and personalities committed to inclusive sports. The sporting qualities of Antibes played a decisive role in choosing the cities that will host the Olympic torch.
The Paralympic Games will be held from August 28 to September 8.
