On March 18th, during the 15th edition of the Monaco Blue Initiative, the French Organizing Committee of UNOC 2025, the Oceanographic Institute of Monaco, and the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation officially entered into a partnership to organize the “Blue Economy and Finance Forum” (BEFF), by signing a Memorandum of Understanding. This significant event, labeled as the “UN Ocean Conference Special Event,” will take place on June 7th and 8th, 2025, at the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco, preceding the United Nations Ocean Conference (June 9-13, 2025).
The Blue Economy and Finance Forum aims to concretely mobilize businesses and innovative financial solutions, both public and private, to promote sustainable ocean activities and achieve Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 14. To this end, it will provide actors from the private sector such as businesses, banks, insurance companies, philanthropists, and from the public sector such as environmental funds, agencies, and development banks, the opportunity to engage, share experiences, and analyze the implementation methods of identified solutions.
In addition to focusing on action for financing impactful projects and creating new financial solutions for the Ocean, the forum will also highlight the most vulnerable countries and regions. At the conclusion of its proceedings, the Forum will formulate recommendations for participants in the United Nations diplomatic conference, which will commence the following day in Nice, as part of UNOC 2025.
Supported by the Principality of Monaco, the involvement of the private sector in financing a sustainable economy aims to promote dialogue and support a balance between environmental conservation and the development of sustainable economic activities.
