All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day: what is the difference?

All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day are two distinct religious observances, united by themes of faith, hope and remembrance.

All Saints’ Day, celebrated on 1 November, honours all saints, both those officially recognised by the Church and those whose holiness is not publicly known. The celebration invites the faithful to reflect on holiness and communion with those who, according to Christian belief, live in the presence of God.

The origins of the feast date back to the early centuries of Christianity. It developed in the East as early as the fourth century and became established in the West over the following centuries. In Rome, the observance is also linked to the history of the Pantheon, which was consecrated as a Christian church dedicated to Saint Mary and the Martyrs.

All Souls’ Day, celebrated on 2 November, is dedicated to prayer for all those who have died. The tradition was established among the monks of Cluny in the tenth century and gradually spread throughout the Christian world from the eleventh century onwards.

On this day, the faithful are encouraged to remember their loved ones, attend Mass and visit cemeteries. Caring for graves and spending time in prayer are ways of keeping the memory of those who have passed away alive.

November: a month of prayer for the dead

The 2 November observance forms part of a broader tradition in which the entire month of November is particularly associated with prayer for the dead.

Anyone wishing to remember a family member or loved one during Mass can contact the parishes of the Diocese of Monaco directly to enquire about arranging a Mass in their memory.

All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day remain important dates for the Catholic community in the Principality, bringing together liturgy, prayer and remembrance.
