The Sovereign Prince of Monaco has officially inaugurated the exhibition “Preserving the Mediterranean: RAMOGE, a Pioneering Agreement for 50 Years”, held in the hall of the Ministry of State from June 29 to October 30, 2026.

The exhibition is jointly organized by the National Archives of Monaco and the RAMOGE Executive Secretariat, in partnership with the Prince’s Palace Archives and the Audiovisual Institute of Monaco. It celebrates 50 years of environmental cooperation between Monaco, France, and Italy.

RAMOGE: a pioneering agreement for Mediterranean protection

Signed on May 10, 1976, in the Throne Room of the Prince’s Palace at the initiative of Prince Rainier III, the RAMOGE Agreement is a landmark in Monaco’s contemporary diplomatic history.

It brings together France, Monaco, and Italy in a shared commitment to protect the marine environment and coastline of the Mediterranean region, originally covering the area between Saint-Raphaël and Genoa, later expanded from the Rhône estuary to the Magra River.

For five decades, RAMOGE has served as a pioneering model of trilateral cooperation, carrying out concrete actions in marine biodiversity protection, pollution control, and environmental awareness. It remains the only Mediterranean agreement combining anti-pollution measures with biodiversity conservation.

A historical exhibition combining archives, science, and diplomacy

The exhibition retraces the origins, evolution, and key achievements of the RAMOGE Agreement through archival documents, photographs, educational content, testimonies, and audiovisual materials.

Visitors can discover previously unpublished documents from the RAMOGE collection, deposited at the National Archives of Monaco in 2025, along with materials from:

  • The Monegasque Government
  • The Prince’s Palace Archives
  • The Audiovisual Institute of Monaco
  • French and Italian diplomatic archives
  • The Oceanographic Institute and the Scientific Centre of Monaco
  • adv-897
  • Press archives, including Nice-Matin and Il Secolo XIX

A multilingual and accessible exhibition

To ensure broad accessibility, the exhibition includes a QR code providing access to an English version on the official RAMOGE website.

An Italian visitor booklet is also available on site, reinforcing the cross-border and multilingual nature of the project.

A travelling and digital exhibition across the Mediterranean

The exhibition also extends beyond Monaco. A bilingual French-Italian travelling version is currently on display at the Genoa Maritime Station, since May 28, 2026, and will later be hosted in France in the autumn.

A virtual version is also available on the RAMOGE website, with further digital access planned on the National Archives of Monaco website starting in November 2026.
