Set in the heart of the Roya Valley, Breil-sur-Roya is ready to welcome runners and outdoor enthusiasts for the Trail des Merveilles 2026, taking place on Saturday 28 February and Sunday 1 March. The event traditionally marks the opening of the Challenge Trail 06 and is one of the most anticipated early-season trail races in the Alpes-Maritimes.
The weekend combines sporting challenge, discovery of the local area and a strong sense of community. Festivities begin on Saturday evening with a night-time urban trail, while Sunday is devoted to the main races, winding through nature along historic mule tracks, forest paths and spectacular viewpoints overlooking the Massif du Mercantour.
Organised by the Breil Athlétic Club, with the support of many volunteers, the Trail des Merveilles stays true to its spirit: accessible races for different levels, promotion of the natural environment and a warm, welcoming atmosphere for athletes, families and spectators alike.
Saturday 28 February
The weekend opens with the Trail des Lumignouns (5 km), a festive night-time urban trail run in mixed pairs. Headlamps light up the narrow streets of the historic centre, creating a fun and convivial opening event.
Sunday 1 March
Several options are on offer:
Trail des Merveilles (28 km) with around 1,960 metres of elevation gain, a demanding and technical race for experienced trail runners.
Trail des Balcons de la Roya (18 km), approximately 1,100 m D+, a challenging but accessible course for trained amateurs.
Marche des Balcons de la Roya (17 km), a non-competitive walk for those who want to enjoy the landscape without the pressure of the stopwatch.
Les Petites Merveilles, dedicated routes for children, introducing the youngest participants to trail running.
Bib collection takes place on Sunday morning between 8:00 and 9:15 am, with some options available on Saturday. Prize-giving will be held in the village square during the afternoon. Entry fees range from €15 for the walk and shorter routes to €30 for the main race.
The Trail des Merveilles takes place in an exceptional natural setting, where alpine terrain meets Mediterranean influences and views stretch as far as the Ligurian coast. Courses alternate between woodland paths, panoramic ridges and technical sections typical of the Roya Valley.
Mandatory safety equipment includes water supply, food, survival blanket, mobile phone, windproof jacket and a reusable cup. Refreshment points are provided along the routes.
At the end of the races, runners and supporters are invited to enjoy a traditional convivial gathering before the official prize ceremony.
