As every year, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) is organizing a World Maritime Day. This year’s edition will be held on September 26, 2024, and will focus on the theme “Navigating the Future: Safety First!” It coincides with the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS).
The theme was chosen in light of the importance of maritime safety and security, as well as the protection of the marine environment, in the work of the IMO. Several events will take place as part of this day.
A symposium will be organized in partnership with the World Meteorological Organization on extreme maritime conditions. In this regard, the Principality of Monaco, a member of the IMO, will be represented.
Moreover, since 2021, the IMO has taken the initiative to invite member states, governmental and non-governmental organizations to illuminate iconic sites in their countries (buildings, seaports, ships…) in blue to promote the global theme of the year and raise public awareness of the contribution of maritime transport worldwide.
To illustrate its commitment to the sea and the maritime community, the Principality will illuminate the Prince’s Palace and the Monaco Yacht Club this year.
