The annexation to France coincided with the development of tourism under the impetus of Henry Bennet’s medical theories and the start of major urban works: the harbor, the railway in 1869. From 1872, the city expanded. Arteries were opened to the West and then in the 1880s to the East with the Boulevard de Garavan. Palaces and villas were built in all these new neighborhoods. Since then, Menton has become one of the essential holiday destinations for the aristocracy and the wealthy during the Belle Époque.

Heritage Tour: The Basilica of Saint Michael the Archangel (Basilique Saint-Michel archange February 17 to March 2)

With its facade, bell tower, pebble-paved forecourt representing the Grimaldi coat of arms, and majestic ramps, it is a jewel of Baroque art.

Let yourself be told the story of this jewel of Baroque art. In the early 17th century, Honoré II settled in Menton with the intention of making it the capital of the principality. Considering the church too modest, he decided to build a beautiful, spacious building in the style of the time, later qualified as Genoese Baroque.

The Vicar General of Ventimiglia blessed the construction site in December 1644. On May 8, 1675, Monsignor Maur de Promontorio, bishop of Ventimiglia, solemnly consecrated the building in the presence of Prince Louis I of Monaco and all the dignitaries of his court. The old bell tower, rebuilt in 1645, was judged insufficient.

It assumed its current appearance in 1819 thanks to the generous Mentonese Joseph Faraldo. The chosen style is Genoese Baroque.
