On the occasion of the sixtieth anniversary of Jean Cocteau’s death, the museum he conceived as a testimony to his art is returning to its historical layout.
Jean Cocteau died on October 11, 1963, leaving behind a body of work as rich as it is incredibly varied. The question of his posterity and the future of his art was one of the artist’s main concerns in his final years, and Menton provided the solution by offering him the Bastion to set up his museum. In this showcase, decorated by Cocteau himself, he wanted to exhibit some of the most emblematic works of his dazzling career: colorful pastels, monumental tapestries, surprising paintings, and bold ceramics make up the original collection of this true testament museum…
Not to mention the famous series of “Lovers,” drawings that perfectly embody the artist’s Mediterranean inspiration. Sixty years after the death of the Prince of Poets, the Musée Jean Cocteau-Le Bastion has returned to exhibit his historic work, paying vibrant homage to his guardian artist, embracing the words he wanted engraved on his tombstone: “Je reste avec vous” (“I remain with you”).

Exhibition presents a selection of abstract, expressionist, and surrealist works presented at the Biennials of Menton, a key event for artistic creation in Europe in the second half of the 20th century.
The new exhibition at the Galerie des Musées du Palais de l’Europe, Living Art, Form, Movement, Color, presents a selection of works presented at the Biennials of Menton, a key event for artistic creation in Europe in the second half of the 20th century.
The aim of the exhibition is not to provide an overview of the Biennials, but to focus on painters who embodied a new form of Abstraction or who revisited their relationship with the world. Most of these artists came to the fore after the Liberation, supported by young gallery owners, and achieved success and awards at fairs and art biennials worldwide.
