For many years, there has been no direct railway connection between Nice and Milan. This gap has been partially filled by the Italian Tourist Trains Association, which, since August 3rd, has reinstated the route for the summer period with the Riviera Express.
This train, while not high-speed, offers a tourist service with two trips of about six hours every Saturday and Sunday, linking Italy’s financial capital with the renowned tourist destination on the French Riviera.
Currently, the Principality of Monaco does not benefit from the service, as there is no stop at the underground station in Monaco. “This summer, the stop will not be active,” explained Luigi Cantamessa, the general manager of FS Treni Turistici Italiani, “because the Monegasque authorities denied us authorization due to the diesel traction of the locomotive. However, next year Monaco will be regularly included on the route.”
The train offers high comfort, consisting of seven carriages, including a dining car, a first-class carriage, and a large carriage for transporting luggage and sports equipment such as bicycles.
For travelers purchasing a first-class ticket, the dining service in the exclusive dining car is included, with breakfast and dinner, along with the possibility of bringing their own luggage.
The train will be in service until August 31st, with the possibility of extending the service to the first week of September.
