More than two decades after its last performance in Monaco, Giuseppe Verdi’s “Aida” returns to the stage of the Opéra de Monte-Carlo. From November 16 to 22, 2025, the Grimaldi Forum will host a spectacular new production directed by Davide Livermore, renowned for his ability to blend visual power with modern sensibility.
Based on a libretto by Antonio Ghislanzoni from a subject by Ferdinand Mariette, the opera premiered at the Khedivial Opera House in Cairo in 1871 and quickly became one of Verdi’s greatest triumphs. Its revival in Monaco pays tribute to the grandeur of Italian melodrama and its enduring emotional resonance.
“Aida” weaves together intimate passion and epic scale in a timeless story of love, loyalty, and sacrifice.
The Ethiopian princess Aida, enslaved in Egypt, is torn between her love for the Egyptian hero Radamès and her duty to her homeland. Through their tragic fate, Verdi explores universal human conflicts — the tension between feeling and duty, the nobility of sacrifice, and the inexorable pull of destiny.
Livermore’s production fuses modern technology, visual poetry, and emotional depth, creating a fully immersive operatic experience that bridges past and present.
With the orchestra and chorus of the Opéra de Monte-Carlo and an exceptional cast of soloists, “Aida” promises to be an unforgettable celebration of Verdi’s genius.
Between majestic choral scenes and moments of lyrical intimacy, the music transcends time, revealing the universal power of the Verdian language.
This production reaffirms the Opéra de Monte-Carlo’s position as a leading institution in international opera, offering audiences a vibrant, grand, and profoundly human interpretation of this timeless masterpiece.
