The Interministerial Delegation for Digital Transition and the Department of Education, Youth and Sports have joined forces to give a second life to students’ digital equipment.
Since 2020, students in public middle and high schools have benefited from loaned computers designed to facilitate learning and strengthen their digital skills. This program is part of the broader digital transition in education.
These devices were recently replaced as part of the regular renewal cycle of school IT equipment.
With a commitment to reducing the environmental footprint of digital technology, the Principality has launched a re-use initiative to extend the lifespan of used devices and maximize their usefulness.
This year, more than 2,700 devices — including computers, tablets, keyboards, and accessories — will be given a second life through this program.
The benefits of this initiative are twofold:
Environmental, by extending the lifespan of devices, which helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the extraction of natural resources.
Social, through the donation of refurbished equipment to associations and a reintegration program run by a partner organization.
This initiative mobilizes the local associative network and relies on the following partners:
Green Monaco: verifies the condition of each device.
AMAPEI: assists with the inventory process.
Actif Azur: manages data erasure.
Monaco Green Box: provides reusable crates for zero-waste logistics.
The rehabilitation of these devices will save at least 150 tonnes of greenhouse gases, equivalent to 940,600 kilometers driven by car, or 495 round trips between Monaco and Paris.
This second-life initiative will also benefit local associations through donations of refurbished devices to:
AMADE, committed to child protection,
Galice 06 network, supporting people in precarious situations with access to housing and employment,
Banque du Numérique 06, promoting digital inclusion.
This initiative aims to continue over time, contributing to a more sustainable digital future and strengthening digital inclusivity.
