The 20th edition of the Palermo-Montecarlo has officially set sail, the 500-nautical-mile offshore race linking the Gulf of Mondello to the Principality of Monaco. Over the past two decades, the competition has established itself as one of the most prestigious classics of the Mediterranean, combining sporting excellence with seafaring tradition.
The starting signal was given at noon, in the presence of the Palinuro, the Italian Navy’s training ship, which added to the atmosphere of this special anniversary. “More than a regatta, the Palermo-Montecarlo is a bridge connecting Monaco and Sicily, keeping alive the spirit of adventure and conviviality,” said Bernard d’Alessandri, General Secretary of the Yacht Club de Monaco, co-organizer together with the Circolo della Vela Sicilia and the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda.
This year’s fleet features 45 yachts from 7 nations, led by Maxi Black Jack 100, holder of the 2024 record with a time of 44h 34m 14s. Alongside the Australian maxi, four yachts will be flying the Monegasque colors: Shooting Star, Gorilla Gang XL, K’Mena, and Joy, the latter crewed by young sailors from the Yacht Club de Monaco’s Sports Section.
Rivals include Intuition (Mini Maxi 69), Sisi (VO65 ex-Volvo Ocean Race), Blue Moon Arkas (TP52), and the French Azahar, with a strong Italian line-up featuring Falcon, Black Pekoe III, Tengher, and Manticore.
To celebrate its 20th anniversary, the event has also launched the Palermo-Montecarlo Virtual Regatta, already counting over 2,700 online participants. Special prizes will be awarded to the best competitors, strengthening the link between tradition and future generations.
Since the inaugural victory of the historic Steinlager II in 2005, the Palermo-Montecarlo has grown into a fixture of international circuits such as the Mediterranean Maxi Offshore Challenge (IMA) and the Italian Offshore Championship (FIV). A regatta that combines myth, competition, and passion for the sea, confirming itself as one of the most eagerly awaited events of the sailing season.
