From April 7 to 11, the Principality of Monaco participated in Rome, as an observer, in the work of the 177th session of the Council of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

During this session, the Council addressed the critical situation in Gaza, where recent assessments by the Organization highlight the massive destruction of the agricultural sector and its impact on the civilian population, which has been exposed to extremely high levels of acute food insecurity since the beginning of the conflict. Discussions also covered the impact of the war in Ukraine on global food systems and FAO’s ongoing efforts in crisis contexts across 75 countries, including Burkina Faso, Lebanon, Niger, and Haiti — countries that receive priority attention in Monaco’s cooperation and emergency aid policies.

In addition to budget-related discussions, this session was notably marked by deliberations on a potential reform of the Organization, with the process expected to be officially presented during the 44th FAO Conference this coming summer.

The Principality joined several European Union statements addressing global food and agriculture issues, as well as the current and future activities of the Organization.

As a reminder, the FAO Council, composed of 49 members, serves as the executive body of the Organization.
