Monaco is preparing to commemorate the 82nd anniversary of the Liberation of the Principality with a solemn ceremony dedicated to remembering those who contributed to the end of the occupation.

The event will take place on Thursday 3 September 2026 at 4 pm at the Monaco Cemetery, where the traditional Remembrance Ceremony will be held.

The Remembrance Ceremony at Monaco Cemetery

The event, announced by the Mayor of Monaco, will provide an opportunity to pay tribute to those who, during the Second World War, contributed to the Liberation of the Principality.

The ceremony will take place at a site of particular importance to the city’s historical memory and will honour those who fell in the conflict as well as those who took part in the Resistance.

Following the Remembrance Ceremony, wreaths will be laid at the War Memorial, in tribute to the victims and to all those who lost their lives during the war.

Tribute to René Borghini and Joseph Lajoux

The commemorative event will continue with wreath-laying at the graves of René Borghini and Joseph Lajoux, remembered as two figures of the Monegasque Resistance.

The tribute to the two heroes of the Principality will highlight the role played by those who opposed the occupation and contributed, through their commitment and sacrifice, to the Liberation.

Keeping the memory alive

Eighty-two years after the events that marked the Liberation of the Principality, Monaco is once again reaffirming its commitment to preserving the memory of this period in history.

The ceremony on 3 September 2026 will therefore be not only an institutional event, but also an opportunity to pass the value of remembrance on to future generations and honour those who contributed to Monaco’s freedom.
