The travelling exhibition “Monaco and Spain, Five Centuries of Shared History” continues its journey across Spain as part of the celebrations marking the 150th anniversary of the Principality of Monaco’s Diplomatic Mission in Spain. Organized by the Embassy of Monaco, the initiative highlights the deep historical connections and the enduring friendship between the two countries.
Through a carefully curated selection of archival documents, artworks and historical artefacts, the exhibition explores more than five centuries of shared history, illustrating the political, diplomatic, cultural and scientific relationships that have shaped the close ties between the Principality of Monaco and the Kingdom of Spain.
The exhibition was officially inaugurated on 1 June 2026 at the Villanueva Pavilion of Madrid’s Royal Botanical Garden, in the presence of H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco, H.S.H. Princess Charlene, His Majesty King Felipe VI and Her Majesty Queen Letizia of Spain.
During the official visit to Madrid, Prince Albert II held a working meeting with King Felipe VI, during which both leaders reaffirmed the excellent bilateral relations between their countries. The Sovereign Prince and his delegation were also received by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, underlining the strength of the political dialogue and cooperation between Monaco and Spain.
Following its successful opening in Madrid, the exhibition moved to Seville, where it was inaugurated on 22 June at the headquarters of the Cajasol Foundation, in the presence of its President, Antonio Pulido Gutiérrez, and representatives of the Andalusian institutions.
The exhibition will continue its Spanish tour with upcoming stops in Palma de Mallorca, hosted by the Club de Mar, followed by the Central Library of Santander. The final stage of the exhibition will take place in Barcelona this autumn.
As one of the flagship initiatives celebrating 150 years of Monaco’s diplomatic presence in Spain, the exhibition reflects the strength of a relationship that has continued to grow over five centuries through political cooperation, cultural exchange and the enduring friendship between the two nations.
