Monaco’s Museum of Prehistoric Anthropology Opens Applications for 2027 PhD Scholarship in Paleoanthropology and Paleolithic Archaeology

The Museum of Prehistoric Anthropology of Monaco is opening a new opportunity for international researchers with the launch of a call for applications for a three-year PhD scholarship in paleoanthropology and Paleolithic archaeology, starting in January 2027.

The program is aimed at researchers wishing to deepen their knowledge of human origins and prehistoric societies through an advanced academic and scientific research project.

A three-year research opportunity on human evolution

The selection process focuses on doctoral research in the field of prehistory, with particular emphasis on paleoanthropology and Paleolithic archaeology.

Selected candidates will have the opportunity to develop a three-year research project within an international scientific environment, benefiting from the archaeological collections, expertise, and resources of the Museum of Prehistoric Anthropology of Monaco.

Applications will begin to be reviewed from September 15, 2026. Candidates must submit a curriculum vitae and a letter of motivation. The number of available positions is limited.

The International Excavation School at the Grotte de l’Observatoire

Alongside the PhD scholarship program, the Museum of Prehistoric Anthropology is also organizing the 2026 International Excavation School, scheduled from September 8 to September 30 at the Grotte de l’Observatoire in Monaco.

The initiative is aimed at university students, PhD candidates, and young researchers in the fields of archaeology, prehistory, and anthropology.

Participants will take part in stratigraphic excavation activities and post-excavation research, contributing to the study of archaeological layers dating back between 250,000 and 200,000 years ago. These findings represent some of the earliest evidence of human presence in the Principality.
