Two days dedicated to discovering wild animals, learning to identify their tracks and exploring the biodiversity of the Mercantour mountains. This is the experience taking place on Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 November 2026 in Tende, in the Roya Valley, where nature enthusiasts will have the opportunity to take part in a weekend focused on local wildlife.

The event will be held near the Neige et Merveilles mountain refuge, in the hamlet of Minière de Vallauria, at an altitude of approximately 1,500 metres. Surrounded by spectacular mountain scenery, participants will learn how to observe wildlife and discover the techniques used by nature filmmakers to document animals without disturbing their natural habitat.

Discovering Mercantour wildlife: activities and experiences

The programme includes several outdoor activities designed to introduce participants to wildlife observation techniques.

Throughout the weekend, visitors will be able to take part in quiet observation sessions, learn how to identify animal tracks and recognise the areas most frequently visited by wildlife. Special attention will also be given to camera traps, automatic cameras that capture images and videos of animals in their natural environment, even when no observers are present.

Nighttime observation sessions will also be organised, offering an opportunity to discover the habits of species that become active after sunset and experience the sounds of the mountains after dark.

The programme will also provide insights into the vegetation and ecosystems of the upper Roya Valley, one of the most fascinating natural environments in the Alpes-Maritimes.

The activities will be led by Rémy Masséglia, a photographer and wildlife filmmaker who grew up in the Roya Valley and has a lifelong connection with the landscapes and biodiversity of the Mercantour.

He is also known for his documentary Naïs au pays des loups, which tells the story of his mountain explorations with his daughter Naïs, as they discover wild animals and learn about their natural habitats.

His experience will give participants the opportunity to learn more about wildlife photography and nature filmmaking, while understanding the importance of patience, silence and respect for the natural rhythms of animals.

An immersive nature experience focused on wildlife conservation

The weekend in Tende will be more than an opportunity to spot wild animals. It will also be a chance to raise awareness about mountain ecosystems and the importance of protecting them.

Following animal tracks, recognising signs of wildlife activity and learning how to use observation equipment will allow participants to discover a side of nature that often remains hidden from those who visit the mountains simply for hiking.

The experience is aimed at anyone wishing to deepen their connection with the natural environment and explore the Mercantour from a different perspective: a closer, more attentive and environmentally conscious one.
