In June 2023, the Monegasque Athletics Federation (FMA) took a new turn towards sustainability by following the recommendations of the Monegasque Energy Transition Mission (MTE). As part of its flagship events, notably the Herculis EBS Meeting, a member of the Wanda Diamond League, the FMA conducted a thorough assessment of its carbon footprint during the 2023 edition, which took place last July 21st. With the support of the Monegasque company Gienov, the final report was completed in March 2024. This report highlights several crucial points that will guide the FMA’s future actions. Among these, it emerges that 88.5% of emissions are attributable to the transportation of spectators and athletes, 9.4% to materials, and only 0.3% to waste. Regarding this last point, measures have already been taken to reduce the use of single-use plastic, with almost 27 kg of plastic saved thanks to the installation of water fountains for athletes. This assessment marks the beginning of a series of initiatives by the FMA, which now focuses on improving public transportation, among other things. Other actions are already underway, such as the pursuit of ISO 20121 certification. These initiatives are in line with the general recommendations of the Wanda Diamond League, World Athletics, and European Athletics, which support and advise these sustainability efforts. The FMA and the Herculis EBS Meeting thus reaffirm their commitment to sustainability while continuing to promote sporting excellence on the international stage.
