Fifty years after the passing of Joséphine Baker, one of the most dazzling icons of the 20th century, the Opéra de Monte-Carlo presents Bonsoir Monte-Carlo, a unique stage tribute of rare artistic and emotional depth.
Created exclusively for the Principality, this new production will be presented as part of the Monaco National Day celebrations, offering audiences a poetic journey through music, dance, image, and remembrance — a dialogue between past and present.

A dialogue between eras

Conceived and directed by Davide Livermore, with musical direction by Yvan Cassar and a libretto by Nicolas Engel, Bonsoir Monte-Carlo stands out for its visual richness and theatrical sophistication.
The sets by Giò Forma, costumes by Gianluca Falaschi, lighting by Antonio Castro, and video projections by D-Wok create a refined and evocative visual world, while Erika Rombaldoni’s choreography channels the vitality and elegance that defined Joséphine Baker’s art.

South African soprano Pretty Yende, guest of honour for this creation, will bring her radiant voice and magnetic presence to a symbolic role that intertwines memory, emotion, and celebration.
She will be joined by Rachel Valery (Joséphine), Grégory Benchenafi (The Lover) and Brice Lefort (The Young Man) — an ensemble of remarkable artistic depth and charisma.

On stage, the Chorus of the Opéra de Monte-Carlo and the Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Stefano Visconti, will perform a score that bridges classical tradition and contemporary sound, making this production one of the season’s most anticipated events.

A legacy of freedom and grace

More than a tribute to an artist, Bonsoir Monte-Carlo is a celebration of a woman and a symbol.
Joséphine Baker was not only the star who enchanted Paris and the world with her grace and talent; she was also a courageous, visionary woman, embodying the ideals of liberty, dignity, and fraternity.

A close friend of Princess Grace, Baker found in Monaco a haven of friendship and support during the final years of her life.
Through this performance, the Principality renews its deep connection with Joséphine Baker, honouring not only the performer but also her human and moral legacy — one of strength, generosity, and hope.
