European Heritage Days 2026 in Monaco

The Principality of Monaco is once again opening the doors of some of its most emblematic sites for the 2026 European Heritage Days, one of the highlights of Monaco’s cultural calendar. For the 31st edition, taking place mainly on Sunday 4 October, with numerous events already scheduled for Saturday 3 October, 48 sites across the Principality will take part.

Coordinated by the Direction des Affaires Culturelles of the Monegasque Government, the event offers a programme that encourages visitors to look at heritage not as something static, but as a constantly evolving reality. The theme chosen for 2026, “Patrimoine en péril : raviver, résister, réinventer” (“Heritage at Risk: Revive, Resist, Reinvent”), focuses on the need to protect, reinterpret and pass on the places, traditions and stories that shape Monaco’s identity.

Discovering Monaco through its history: from Monte-Carlo to the Rock

Among the highlights are two guided tours focusing on the urban transformation of the Principality.

On Saturday 3 October at 10:30 am, a tour will begin in the atrium of the Monte-Carlo Casino and explore the origins and development of the Monte-Carlo district. Lasting approximately 90 minutes, the route will retrace the major stages that transformed this part of Monaco during the Belle Époque, when the Principality became a favourite destination for European aristocracy.

The tour will show how the urban development associated with Prince Charles III contributed to the creation of a new cityscape and to Monaco’s emergence as an international destination for tourism, culture and entertainment.

On Sunday 4 October at 10:30 am, attention will turn to the historic heart of the Principality with the tour “Aux sources de l’âme monégasque”. Starting from the Malizia statue on Place du Palais, the route will lead through the streets of Monaco-Ville, combining architecture, history, local traditions, legends and anecdotes.

Two different perspectives, therefore, through which visitors can explore the evolution of Monaco by following the story written into its streets and buildings.

“Mémoire des lieux”: when memory becomes art

The relationship between urban transformation and memory is another central theme of the 2026 European Heritage Days.

This idea is at the heart of “Mémoire des lieux”, an exhibition hosted at the Salle d’exposition du quai Antoine Ier from 1 October 2026 to 24 January 2027.

Over recent decades, Monaco has undergone profound transformations. Buildings have disappeared, neighbourhoods have been redesigned and new architectural projects have changed the appearance of the Principality, while traces of the past continue to shape its collective memory.

The exhibition explores this relationship through the work of contemporary artists, bringing art, architecture and memory into dialogue.

During the European Heritage Days, admission will be free on Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 October from 12 noon to 6 pm.

On Saturday from 2 to 4 pm, artist and ceramicist Ewan McNab will also lead a workshop inspired by the work of Roger Capron. Participants will be invited to create a small landscape in clay, transforming memories of places into matter and colour. Registration is required.

Natural heritage takes centre stage at the Oceanographic Museum

The concept of heritage also extends to the natural world. The Oceanographic Museum of Monaco will dedicate Sunday 4 October to the Ocean, considered a living heritage that is both immense and vulnerable.

The museum will be open from 10 am to 6 pm, with special admission prices of €9 for adults and €6 for children and teenagers aged 4 to 17, students and people with disabilities.

Free guided tours lasting approximately 75 minutes will also take place at 10:30 am, 1:30 pm, 3 pm and 4:30 pm. Each tour will be limited to ten participants, with registration available directly at the museum ticket desks.

The tours will explore the main threats facing marine ecosystems, conservation strategies and the initiatives developed by the Principality to protect the Ocean.

Monaco City Hall opens its doors

The Monaco City Hall will also take part in the event by opening its headquarters on Place de la Mairie to visitors.

Guests will be able to discover some of the institution’s most significant rooms, including the Wedding Hall, Council Chamber and Mayor’s Office.

The programme will also include musical performances linked to Monaco’s cultural traditions. At 3 pm and 4 pm, the choir U Cantin d’a Roca will showcase the Principality’s musical and linguistic heritage.

Behind the scenes at the Caroline Library

The European Heritage Days also provide an opportunity to discover places that are normally closed to the public.

This is the case of the Heritage Collection of the Caroline Library, which will offer guided tours of its conservation facilities on Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 October at 10 am and 2 pm.

The tours will be accompanied by a demonstration dedicated to document restoration, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the techniques used to preserve books, manuscripts and historical documents.

It is a chance to understand how much work goes into protecting the written memory of a community for future generations.

The Exotic Garden returns to the spotlight

Another place to add to the list is Monaco’s Exotic Garden, which recently reopened after six years of renovation work.

For the European Heritage Days, the garden will be open free of charge on Sunday 4 October from 9 am to 6 pm. The Botanical Centre will also organise guided tours at 10 am and 2 pm, with advance registration required.

Its greenhouses are home to an exceptional collection of cacti and succulent plants, making the Exotic Garden another example of how Monaco’s heritage can be experienced through nature and biodiversity.

48 places to discover another side of Monaco

The 2026 European Heritage Days in Monaco involve 48 sites, offering visitors the chance to explore a remarkably diverse range of places and institutions.

Participating venues include the Palais de Justice, Hôtel du Gouvernement, Grands Appartements of the Prince’s Palace, Conseil National, Museum of Stamps and Coins, Collection of H.S.H. the Prince of Monaco’s Cars, Stade Louis II, Monte-Carlo Casino, Théâtre Princesse Grace, Audiovisual Institute, Museum of Prehistoric Anthropology, Académie Princesse Grace and the Francis Bacon MB Art Foundation.

They are joined by numerous institutions, associations and other venues that contribute to a broad and multifaceted portrait of Monaco’s heritage.

The appeal of the event lies precisely in the opportunity to discover a different side of the Principality: not only the Monaco associated with luxury, Formula 1 and glamorous events, but also a territory shaped by archives, architecture, traditions, gardens, collections, languages, memories and landscapes.

How to take part in the European Heritage Days 2026 in Monaco

Reservations for activities requiring them will open on Friday 25 September at 9 am through the official European Heritage Days portal.

To make getting around easier, Monaco’s public buses will be free of charge during the event.

A special daily parking rate of €9 will also be available at the Salines, Condamine, Pêcheurs, Stade Louis II, Boulingrins, Grimaldi Forum and Colle car parks.
