In the heart of the Roya Valley, Saorge is preparing for a September dedicated to discovering its historical, religious and architectural heritage. The medieval village, built on the mountainside overlooking the valley, will host two events offering visitors the chance to explore its history more closely: an excursion from Menton to the Saorge Monastery and a special programme for the European Heritage Days.

With its steep lanes, covered passages, ancient chapels and panoramic views over the Roya Valley, Saorge is one of the most fascinating destinations in the hinterland of the French Riviera.

September 17: an excursion from Menton to Saorge Monastery

The first event is scheduled for Thursday, September 17, 2026, with the “Au Monastère de Saorge” excursion organised by the Menton, Riviera & Merveilles Tourist Office.

The excursion will take place from 9:30 am to 1 pm, departing from the Menton Tourist Office at the Palais de l’Europe, 8 avenue Boyer. Transportation to Saorge is included in the price and will be provided by shuttle.

The excursion includes a guided visit to the Saorge Monastery, a national monument, with a tour focusing on the history of the complex and its architectural features.

The participation fee is €29. The activity requires a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 8 participants, and advance booking is required.

Participants are advised to bring a full water bottle, warm clothing, as a significant part of the experience takes place outdoors, and closed shoes suitable for walking. Pets are not permitted and the activity is not accessible to wheelchair users. The excursion will take place subject to favourable weather conditions.

Saorge takes centre stage during the European Heritage Days

The second major event will take place on Saturday, September 19 and Sunday, September 20, 2026, when Saorge joins the European Heritage Days, offering visitors the opportunity to explore some of the village’s most important historical and religious sites free of charge.

During the weekend, several landmarks will be open to the public, including the Saint-Sauveur parish church, together with its recently restored sacristy, the Chapelle Saint-Claude des Pénitents Noirs, and the private church of Madone du Poggio.

The Saorge Monastery will also welcome visitors, remaining open from 10 am to 6 pm. On this occasion, visitors will exceptionally be able to access the upper floor of the complex.

Guided tours are also scheduled for 11 am, 2:30 pm and 4:30 pm.

On Sunday, September 20, the programme will include a guided tour focusing on Saint-Sauveur Church, its sacristy, Madone du Poggio and the Monastery.

A medieval village of narrow lanes, Baroque architecture and panoramic views

Listed among the Plus Beaux Villages de France, Saorge has preserved a remarkably distinctive urban landscape. The village stretches along the mountainside like a natural amphitheatre, with a network of narrow lanes, stairways, covered passages and small squares that follow the contours of the terrain.

The Franciscan Monastery of Saorge is one of the village’s main attractions. Listed as a Monument historique, the complex preserves several spaces that bear witness to the long Franciscan presence, including the cloister, the monks’ former cells, Notre-Dame-des-Miracles Church, the refectory and the terraced gardens.

The monastery’s location further enhances its appeal, creating a direct connection between architecture, mountain landscapes and history.

The complex has also taken on a new cultural role. Today, it hosts residencies for writers, translators, screenwriters and composers, becoming a space dedicated to artistic creation and research.

September’s events offer two different ways to experience Saorge.

The September 17 excursion provides an organised route departing from Menton, with transportation included to the Monastery, accompanying participants as they discover the history and architecture of the complex.

The European Heritage Days on September 19 and 20, meanwhile, will provide free access to several historic sites in the village, together with guided tours dedicated to Saorge’s religious and cultural heritage.
