In Fontvieille, Avenue des Papalins is undergoing a major redevelopment project aimed at sustainably improving the living environment and user comfort.
As a key thoroughfare of the district, this avenue is used daily by numerous pedestrians. The expansion of the planters will create a continuous landscaped corridor and establish a vegetative buffer between vehicular traffic and pedestrian pathways, thereby enhancing safety and the overall quality of movement.
The project includes the creation of 111 m² of planted areas, replacing seasonal flower beds with permanent Mediterranean vegetation that will provide staggered flowering throughout the seasons. New magnolia trees will be added to complement the existing trees, alternating with the current citrus trees, in order to structure and harmonize the overall landscape.
Well suited to the local climate, the magnolia helps improve air quality by capturing fine particles and contributes to reducing urban heat islands thanks to the density of its foliage.
All existing trees will be fully preserved, with particular care taken to protect their root systems during the works. The new planters will also make it possible to modernize the irrigation system, thereby optimizing water management.
The project has been designed to preserve existing uses, including the delivery area, short-term parking (drop-off zone), and bicycle racks, all of which will be maintained.
As part of the works, 32 surface-level two-wheeler parking spaces will be removed. In return, 52 parking spaces will be created within the Papalins car park, including 14 spaces dedicated to electric two-wheelers, increasing the overall parking capacity while freeing up public space for additional green areas.
The works are scheduled to continue until early March.
