As part of its policy promoting environmentally friendly urban planning, the Principality of Monaco has initiated the installation of a so-called “regulation pigeon loft” in the gardens surrounding the Fontvieille Basin. The system, designed to ethically regulate the pigeon population, is expected to be operational by the end of 2025.

An approach based on prevention, care, and ecological balance
Installed on a site selected for its urban and environmental compatibility, this regulation pigeon loft aims to limit births by replacing real eggs with artificial ones — a simple and respectful method that allows intervention without harming the birds. It also helps to keep colonies within a designated area, thereby reducing nuisances caused by their dispersion into unsuitable zones. Finally, it provides an opportunity to regularly monitor the birds’ health and provide appropriate care, under the supervision of the service provider in charge of managing the facility. This respectful regulation method draws inspiration from best practices implemented in several European municipalities.

On-site educational support
Informative panels will be installed near the pigeon loft to explain how it works and to remind the public of the importance of not feeding pigeons in public spaces.
