Holiday Pay

Non-working Holidays
Employees are entitled to pay for holidays. Hourly, daily, or piece-rate employees must receive compensation for the earnings they lost due to the holiday. Holidays that fall on an employee’s regular rest day or on a day that is typically non-working within the company are also paid, even partially.

Holiday pay is due only if the employee was present at work the day before and the day after the holiday, unless the absence is due to extraordinary circumstances (such as injury or illness with a medical certificate, or certain family events).

Working on Holidays
If an employee is required to work on a holiday, in addition to the normal pay for the work performed, the employee is entitled to either:

  • An allowance equal to the pay for that day
  • Compensatory paid time off

Holiday during Paid Leave
When a public holiday falls during a paid leave period, it is not counted as part of the leave.
