European summer destinations are numerous: the wonderful Greek islands, the fabulous Amalfi Coast, or the pristine reserves of the island of Sardinia, but in terms of glamour, the French Riviera remains unbeatable. Cannes, St Tropez, Monaco, the choice is endless!
What are the best hotels in the Principality of Monaco for a dream summer stay?
The principality stretches for two square kilometers along the entire French Riviera, with Menton nearby and Nice to the west, and is the second smallest sovereign state (after the Vatican City). Monte-Carlo is one of its districts, centered around Place du Casino. If touring mega-yachts at the harbor isn’t enough, one can always visit the Prince’s Palace, stroll through the Exotic Garden, and see an exhibition at the Grimaldi Forum.
Right in the city center, the Hôtel Metropole is one of our favorite hotels in Monte-Carlo, and not just because the late and legendary Karl Lagerfeld designed the pool area. It has just opened a new restaurant for the summer season, overseen by a chef trained by Joël Robuchon. Along the waterfront, Monte-Carlo Beach is the place to relax under the guaranteed Riviera sun, with trips to Club La Vigie for equally enjoyable lunches.
A Belle-Époque gem, the Hôtel Hermitage was built in 1896, after six years of work directed by the Monegasque architect Nicolas Marquet, with the help of the famous Gustave Eiffel, who designed the dome of the Winter Garden. In 1928, the Société des Bains de Mer de Monte-Carlo acquired the palace, which today boasts five stars and a reception area of historical and cultural interest. With its numerous suites, including the exceptional Diamond Suite Présidentielle and Diamond Suite Princière, the Hôtel Hermitage is one of the most prestigious luxury hotels in the world and has hosted businessmen and celebrities within its walls.
The latest jewel of the Belle-Époque, the Hôtel de Paris was founded and inaugurated in 1864. The building, designed by the French architect Godinot de la Bretonnerie, is located on Place du Casino. Adjacent to the hotel is the famous Café de Paris, the Casino de Monte-Carlo, and the Opéra de Monte-Carlo, the pulsating heart of Monte-Carlo.
