On December 2nd in The Hague, Netherlands, H.E. Mr. Frédéric LABARRERE, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Principality of Monaco to the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), signed two voluntary contribution agreements with the Director-General of this Organization, H.E. Mr. Fernando ARIAS.
Through these agreements, the Principality of Monaco reaffirms its commitment to upholding the provisions of the Chemical Weapons Convention. Specifically, the contributions from the Princely Government will support, for the first time, the training of chemists from the African continent, particularly in the field of biotoxin analysis, and, once again, the verification missions conducted by OPCW experts in the Syrian Arab Republic.
It is worth noting that the Principality of Monaco has been a founding member of the OPCW since 1997, the year the Chemical Weapons Convention entered into force. The OPCW is mandated to implement the provisions of this Convention, which include the destruction of chemical weapons through a transparent and reliable verification regime, the prevention of their re-emergence, and the promotion of international cooperation in the peaceful use of chemistry.
In 2013, the Organization was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for its significant efforts in the elimination of chemical weapons.
