If Moby Dick is an absolute masterpiece, it is because it is not only a fabulous adventure novel but also the logbook of an obsession. Since a fierce sperm whale took Captain Ahab’s leg, he has pursued it relentlessly with hatred and fury. He leads a crew of sailors, gradually drawn into the whirlwind of this mad vengeance. This captivating tale, revealing an initiatory quest, is as profound as it is wise. It raises the great questions of human existence and engraves a new myth in the memory of humankind: that of the white whale.
