A BARRAGE AGAINST THE PACIFIC
Marguerite Duras / Anne Consigny
Tuesday, November 12 – 8:00 PM
Written in 1947, the novel A Barrage Against the Pacific was published three years later in 1950. It was written at a time when Marguerite Duras had just divorced her first husband and remarried Dionys Mascolo, with whom she had a child during this period. Thus, between caring for Jean, her young son, and her new love story, she crafted this novel, inspired by her own youthful experiences.
“Alone on stage in her light, flowing dress, Anne Consigny brings soul and grace to this powerful story of colonists and colonization, of lost lives and heart-wrenching disillusionments. She embodies both mother and daughter, as two sides of the same struggle of being a woman. But without complaint, with a determined strength. Having previously played Duras brilliantly alongside Emmanuelle Riva in Savannah Bay, she possesses its haunting secrets. She dances her characters.” — Télérama
