The Centre d’art of Mougins presents, until September 29th, 2024, an exhibition of the artist Miguel Chevalier highlighting the influence exerted on his work by the painter, designer, and writer Francis Picabia.
Entitled ‘Fractal Flowers – Transparences imaginaires / Tribute to Francis Picabia’, the exhibition is also motivated by the fact that Picabia lived in Mougins for nearly a decade.
The aim of the exhibition is to create a dialogue between two generations of artists, highlighting the significance of Picabia’s work and its ongoing influence on Miguel Chevalier.
Considered a pioneer of digital art, Chevalier is known for his virtual herbals generated from an approach developed in the late 1990s. His research is based on the observation of the plant world, which is transposed into the digital universe.
The exhibited works intertwine the links between the Mediterranean nature, which inspired Picabia, and digital art. In particular, the Fractal Flowers, one of the herbals presented during the exhibition, finds inspiration in Picabia’s Transparences, in which plant elements are mixed with human bodies.
During the exhibition, Chevalier presents seven drawings made using robots specifically created for the occasion, representing an open dialogue with Picabia’s Transparences.
The Centre d’Art of Mougins is located at Place du Commandant Lamy.
