“Contrary to the original version, we chose to address the early form of Alzheimer’s disease. Having decided to portray the characters ourselves, we constantly asked ourselves: ‘What if this story were ours?‘ We therefore anchored the characters of Jeanne and Arthur in our own generation, with our references and our language. Thus, their offbeat daily life and their singular love story were redesigned. We also wanted to bring lightness and fantasy, in the image of the relationship between Arthur and Jeanne. We endeavored never to fall into the melodramatic trap that the severity of this disease could have engendered, which is often the case for couples affected by Alzheimer’s, trapped in action and the concrete. This does not diminish the pain and emotion, but it allows us not to be overwhelmed.” Marie-Julie Baup and Thierry Lopez.
