PAUVRES BITOS ! OU LE DÎNER DE TÊTES
Jean Anouilh
Tuesday, February 25 – 8:00 PM
When the play was first created in 1956, France had been out of the Indochina conflict for two years. It had been at war in Algeria for two more years, and the collaboration with the German occupiers had yet to be fully processed.
It is in this grim context that Jean Anouilh wrote Poor Bitos, in an unexpected comedic tone. A true scandal at the time, the play divided critics and audiences, while achieving a remarkable success.
“We were eagerly awaiting Maxime d’Aboville in the role of Bitos. First because he revered Michel Bouquet, to whom he paid a magnificent tribute with his show I Am Not Michel Bouquet, and he is also a deep connoisseur of the French Revolution. But above all, because he is an outstanding artist, and his acting range is admirable. Dry, nervous, using his small stature and his voice, the actor gives Bitos many nuances, thus showing the complexity of a man whom no one has ever loved or accepted. Bravo!” — L’ŒIL D’OLIVIER
