On January 25, 1985, Prince Rainier III inaugurated the Louis II Stadium. Forty years later, this iconic building, recognizable by its distinctive arches, continues to be a key player in the Monegasque landscape. Designed as a multi-purpose venue, it has demonstrated its versatility by hosting major sports, cultural, and community events for four decades.
To celebrate this anniversary, several events are being organized.
An official ceremony to revisit the origins
On February 4, an official ceremony will take place in the Honor Hall of the Louis II Stadium. This event will highlight the genesis of the project, from its design to its inauguration, with the presence of those who contributed to its construction and development. It is an opportunity to recall the stadium’s fundamental role at the heart of Monegasque life.
An immersive exhibition on 40 years of events
Beyond its architecture and institutional role, the Louis II Stadium primarily thrives thanks to the numerous disciplines and competitions that take place there every year. To honor this dynamism, an unprecedented exhibition titled “Once Upon a Time” will be inaugurated during an official preview in April 2025.
This event will bring together the key figures who contributed to making the Louis II Stadium an iconic venue. On this occasion, the sports federations and associations that have animated its facilities over the decades will be invited to highlight their commitment and essential role in the stadium’s ongoing vibrancy.
The exhibition, which will be held in the renovated internal pedestrian street, will remain open to the public for several months. It will showcase the stadium’s first landmark events: the first football match, the first world record, the first archery competition, the first concert, the first boxing gala, and many more.
Through archives, photos, and posters collected from various entities, visitors will be able to relive these historical moments and measure the impact of the Louis II Stadium on sport and culture in Monaco.
To design this ambitious retrospective, the Stadium’s management called upon set designer Mr. Ahmad Reshad, a former student of the École Supérieure d’Arts Plastiques, and exhibition curator Mr. Gérard Holtz, a journalist and sports enthusiast.
A commemorative stamp for collectors
Finally, to mark this historic anniversary, a commemorative stamp celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Louis II Stadium will be issued on March 18, 2025. A beautiful way to commemorate the event and offer collectors a unique philatelic souvenir.
