On 8 December 2025, the United Nations General Assembly discussed topics related to oceans and the law of the sea, including sustainable fisheries, the BBNJ Agreement on the conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction, and the upcoming United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC4).
In her statement, H.E. Ms. Isabelle PICCO, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Monaco to the UN, emphasized the importance the Princely Government places on the preservation and protection of marine ecosystems.
Focusing on the fundamental role of science, her speech highlighted the variety of initiatives undertaken by the Government and Monegasque entities in 2025 to address the environmental challenges facing the oceans.
Among the major actions carried out by the Principality and recognized internationally are:
The organization, in June 2025, of the Blue Economy and Finance Forum
The launch of the Space4Ocean Alliance
The two-year presidency of the Pelagos Agreement, dedicated to the protection of marine mammals in the Mediterranean
The adoption of new climate commitments under the Paris Agreement
These initiatives confirm Monaco’s active role in promoting sustainable ocean management and mobilizing the international community for the protection of marine ecosystems.
