On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of H.S.H. Prince Albert II’s reign, the Principality of Monaco has chosen to pay tribute to its Sovereign with a gesture both symbolic and enduring: the renewal of his effigy on the €1 and €2 circulation coins.
The new portrait, engraved with great precision, depicts the Prince in a frontal pose — solemn and direct. Beside the image appear his crowned monogram and the traditional red and silver lozengy pattern of the Grimaldi coat of arms. This new design replaces the side profile introduced in 2005, marking a new era in the official representation of the Monegasque Sovereign.
This initiative is not only a tribute to Prince Albert II’s two decades on the throne but also a tangible symbol of institutional continuity and national identity. The coins, everyday objects yet emblems of sovereignty, thus become vehicles of collective memory and celebration.
The new effigy will appear on all €1 and €2 coins dated 2025, which will enter into circulation by the end of October, issued by the Trésorerie générale des finances. The release is expected to attract considerable interest among collectors and numismatic enthusiasts across Europe — a small object of great symbolic and historical value, accompanying Monaco into the future under the proud gaze of its Prince.
