Monaco and Mauritius Establish Diplomatic Relations

The Principality of Monaco and the Republic of Mauritius have officially established diplomatic relations. The agreement was signed on August 25, 2026, in New York, through the signing of a joint communiqué by the two countries’ Permanent Representatives to the United Nations.

The document was signed by H.E. Isabelle Picco, Permanent Representative of Monaco to the United Nations, and H.E. Milan J. N. Meetarbhan, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Mauritius.

The agreement marks a new step in the Principality’s international relations and lays the groundwork for joint initiatives between two small island states that share a strong commitment to marine conservation and environmental sustainability.

Marine conservation and sustainable development at the heart of cooperation

The Republic of Mauritius, an island nation in the Indian Ocean, has made marine environmental protection one of the pillars of its public policy. The country is pursuing an ambitious blue economy policy and a national sustainable development strategy aimed at combining economic growth with the responsible use of marine resources and the preservation of ocean ecosystems.

This approach shares several common ground with the policies pursued by Monaco, which has long been committed to protecting the marine environment and promoting sustainable development.

These shared priorities could encourage the creation of new joint projects and initiatives in the coming years.

Monaco and Mauritius identify new areas for cooperation

Following the signing of the joint communiqué, the two Permanent Representatives discussed several areas of common interest.

Key sectors include environmental protection, sustainable tourism and education. Monaco and Mauritius expressed their willingness to progressively strengthen cooperation in these fields, drawing on their respective expertise and experience.

Future cooperation could therefore include initiatives focused on marine ecosystems, as well as projects aimed at raising awareness, promoting education and encouraging more sustainable approaches to tourism.

A new chapter in Monaco’s international relations

The establishment of diplomatic relations with Mauritius further expands the Principality of Monaco’s international network and creates a new institutional channel between two countries that, despite their different geographical contexts, face a number of shared challenges as island states.

The agreement signed on August 25 therefore marks the beginning of a new phase of dialogue focused on strategic issues including ocean protection, sustainability, responsible tourism and education, with the aim of turning common priorities into concrete opportunities for cooperation.
