MONACO – What remains of a city when buildings disappear, landscapes change and urban spaces are transformed? This is the question at the heart of “Mémoire des lieux”, a new exhibition dedicated to the heritage of the Principality of Monaco, on view until January 24, 2027, at the Salle d’exposition du quai Antoine Ier.
The exhibition was inaugurated on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, by H.S.H. the Sovereign Prince and H.R.H. the Princess of Hanover, in the presence of, among others, Yvette Lambin-Berti, Secretary of State, Lionel Beffre, Minister of State Counsellor for the Interior, and Françoise Gamerdinger, Director of Cultural Affairs.
Organized by the Direction des Affaires Culturelles and curated by Célia Bernasconi, Director of the Institut du Patrimoine, “Mémoire des lieux” offers a reflection on the relationship between memory, heritage and urban transformation.
The exhibition invites visitors to discover Monaco from a different perspective through a selection of photographs, monumental works, audiovisual installations and contemporary creations.
Architecture, artworks, stories and the experiences of residents become fragments of a collective memory that continues to evolve alongside the city.
The exhibition also reflects the Government of Monaco’s commitment to preserving and passing on the Principality’s heritage, connecting the history of its places with the transformations that have shaped and continue to shape Monaco.
The exhibition brings together works by artists from different generations and artistic backgrounds. Among those represented are Albert Diato, Luis Molné, Roger Capron, Victor Vasarely, Denis Morog, Keith Haring, Gabriele Basilico, Lidwine Prolonge, Mathilde Janson and Jürgen Nefzger.
The diversity of the works creates a journey in which heritage is viewed not only as something to preserve, but also as a reality in constant transformation.
Through this dialogue between past and present, art becomes a way of exploring the changes taking place in the territory and the relationship between the city and those who live in it.
One of the works created specifically for the exhibition comes from invited artist Gabriel-Noé Rosticher, who has produced several artistic creations for “Mémoire des lieux”.
Among them is an unreleased film dedicated to Monaco, conceived as a kind of cartography of the Principality through places and infrastructures that are often less visible: tunnels, galleries, infrastructure, traffic routes and areas undergoing transformation.
The project broadens the view of the city beyond its best-known landmarks, highlighting spaces whose evolution tells the story of Monaco’s ongoing urban transformation.
The exhibition design is also part of the cultural project. The scenography was created as part of the “Décors” programme by Louise Chatelain and Théophile Sargenti, students at Pavillon Bosio.
The layout contributes to a visitor journey in which artworks, images and installations engage with the exhibition’s central theme: the memory of places and what remains when a territory changes.
“Mémoire des lieux” can be visited at the Salle d’exposition du quai Antoine Ier in Monaco until January 24, 2027.
Admission is free, and the exhibition is open Tuesday to Sunday, from 12 noon to 6 pm.
“Mémoire des lieux” offers a journey through Monaco’s memory, bringing together heritage, contemporary art and urban transformation. The exhibition invites visitors to discover the Principality not only through what has remained, but also through the traces left by places that continue to change.
