The Dante Alighieri Association – Monaco Committee presents, under the High Patronage of H.S.H. the Princess of Hanover and with the Patronage of the Embassy of Italy in the Principality, on Friday, March 1, 2024, at 8:00 PM at the Théâtre des Variétés in Monaco, the musical performance: “La leggerezza delle Cose” by pianist Roberto Prosseda, inspired by Italo Calvino’s “American Lessons.”
An evening in which the highly successful Italian pianist will “narrate” music, referring to the six categories chosen by Calvino for a series of six lectures at Harvard University. Lectures that were never held due to the writer’s death in 1985, later giving rise to the well-known book “Six Memos for the Next Millennium.” Lightness, quickness, exactitude, visibility, multiplicity, and coherence are the six concepts selected by Calvino, which “can perfectly apply to the interpretation and listening of music” as well as to writing and the existence of each of us. “Take life lightly, as lightness is not superficiality, but soaring above things, not having burdens on the heart,” says the great author whose centenary of birth was celebrated in 2023.
To interpret the spirit of one of the most significant Italian writers of the twentieth century for the audience of the Principality, a pianist, Roberto Prosseda, will perform. Prosseda has regularly played with major international orchestras such as the London Philharmonic, New Japan Philharmonic, Calgary Philharmonic, Moscow State Philharmonic, Santa Cecilia, La Scala Philharmonic, Berliner Symphoniker, and others. In Italy, he is a regular guest at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia, Teatro alla Scala, Unione Musicale di Torino, Teatro la Fenice, Accademia Chigiana di Siena, and Teatro Comunale di Bologna. Prosseda is also the creator and co-author of three documentaries produced by RAI dedicated to Mendelssohn, Chopin, and Liszt, and is currently the artistic director of Cremona Musica International Exhibitions & Festival, the Patmos Chamber Music Festival, as well as the musical consultant of Teatro Comunale “Giuseppe Verdi” in Pordenone. His musical expertise and sensitivity are well-suited to convey the elevated spirit and cultured lightness of Italo Calvino to the members and friends of the Dante Alighieri Association in Monaco, presided over by Maria Betti.
