
As part of preparations for the upcoming presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe by the Principality of Monaco, Alain Berset met with 150 high school students for a meaningful discussion on the future of democracy in Europe.
The event took place at the Charles III College auditorium in the presence of Lionel Beffre, Gabriel Revel, and Jean-Philippe Vinci. Students from Albert Ier and François d’Assise-Nicolas Barré high schools participated in this interactive exchange focused on European democratic values and youth engagement.
A key highlight of the event was the award ceremony of a competition dedicated to the Council of Europe. Students were invited to write speeches on the role of young people in safeguarding democracy, proposing concrete solutions to strengthen civic participation.
The submissions demonstrated strong awareness, critical thinking, and commitment to fundamental European values such as rule of law, democracy, and human rights. Winners received their awards from Alain Berset and presented their speeches to the audience.
In his address, Lionel Beffre emphasized that youth participation is essential to democratic vitality. Monaco reaffirmed its commitment to promoting European values and active citizenship.
The presence of Alain Berset is particularly significant in light of the growing recognition of youth within the Council of Europe, notably since the Reykjavik Declaration, which highlights young people as key actors in democratic processes.
