The Médiathèque Caroline in Monaco will host a lecture on Tuesday 26 May 2026 at 6:30 PM titled “Gustave Caillebotte, painter and patron of the Impressionists”, presented by Cécilia Auber. The event will take place at 5 Promenade Honoré II and is open to the public.

The conference will focus on Gustave Caillebotte (1848–1894), a major yet often understated figure of French Impressionism whose contribution was both artistic and financial, playing a decisive role in the development of the movement.

Gustave Caillebotte and Impressionism: modern painting and urban vision

Today regarded as one of the key artists of Impressionism, Gustave Caillebotte is known for his innovative depiction of modern Paris. His work captures the transformation of the French capital in the late 19th century through precise compositions and striking perspectives.

Among his most famous works are Rue de Paris, temps de pluie and Les Raboteurs de parquet, which combine realism, compositional clarity, and a modern vision of urban life.

His style, positioned between realism and Impressionist experimentation, makes him one of the movement’s most distinctive voices.

Artistic friendships and a central role in the Impressionist movement

Beyond his painting, Caillebotte was closely connected to leading Impressionist artists such as Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Edgar Degas, and Camille Pissarro.

He also played a crucial role as a patron and collector, financially supporting Impressionist exhibitions and helping ensure their success at a time when the movement was still struggling for recognition.

One of Caillebotte’s most significant contributions was his donation of around forty artworks to the French state, a decisive act that helped integrate Impressionism into major national museum collections.

This legacy established him as a key figure in the preservation and recognition of Impressionist heritage.
