The intricate world of the art market — with its risks, opportunities, and grey areas — returns to the spotlight in Monaco with a new lecture by Professor Simone Facchinetti, following the strong interest raised by his previous talk. This year’s theme is: “Fakes in the Market of Old Master Paintings: Frauds, Scams, and Extraordinary Deals.”

The event is organised by the Dante Alighieri Society of the Principality of Monaco, under the High Patronage of H.R.H. the Princess of Hanover and with the support of the Embassy of Italy. The lecture — free admission — will take place on Thursday, 11 December 2025 at 6:30 pm at the Auditorium Rainier III (Vasarely Room, formerly Room C).

Professor Simone Facchinetti, Associate Professor of Early Modern Art History at the University of Salento, author of numerous publications including The Art Market – The Rules of the Game (Allemandi, 2023) and curator of national and international exhibitions, will offer an in-depth exploration of the world of fakes, copies, and attribution dynamics.

He will also address the delicate issue of copies in the art market:
“Copies are extremely widespread,” explains Facchinetti. “They can be mere servile replicas or become true originals once recognised as such — consequently downgrading to ‘copies’ works that were previously considered authentic.”

The professor will also highlight how the Old Master market has recently brought to light several emblematic cases that merit close examination.
