On December 10, 2024, during the ongoing work of the General Assembly, UN Member States addressed the topic of oceans and the law of the sea.
On this occasion, Mr. Jérémie ADLERFLIGEL, Third Secretary at the Permanent Mission of Monaco, intervened to reaffirm the Principality of Monaco’s ongoing commitment to the preservation and protection of seas and oceans. Several actions taken by the Princely Government throughout 2024 were highlighted, such as the ratification in May of the Agreement related to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea concerning the conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction (the BBNJ Agreement).
The work of the Monaco Scientific Centre, the Monaco Oceanographic Institute, the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, and various actors of Monegasque civil society were also showcased during this speech.
Furthermore, in anticipation of the 3rd United Nations Conference aimed at supporting the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14 (UNOC3), this intervention emphasized the priorities of the Princely Government in the face of the consequences of global warming, sea-level rise, and the retreat of the cryosphere.
Finally, mention was made of the organization of the Forum on Blue Economy and Finance in the Principality of Monaco next June. This event will contribute to affirming the essential role of the private sector in financing a sustainable economy.
