The United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs visits the Principality

A delegation from the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs made a working visit to the Principality from Wednesday, September 4 to Friday, September 6, 2024, as part of its project “Space Law for New Space Actors.”
The Monaco Office for Outer Space Affairs* requested this UN entity, based in Vienna, to assist in the development of a draft law on space activities and to strengthen its understanding of the State’s responsibilities under the international legal framework in this field.
To this end, international experts from academic, political, and technical sectors were invited to exchange with the Government of Monaco’s services on space law, exploring various themes specific to the Monegasque context.
This three-day technical assistance mission, held at the Interministerial Delegation for Digital Transition, is also part of Monaco’s preparation for adherence to the main international treaties on outer space.
The experts were welcomed by Frédéric GENTA, Interministerial Delegate for Attractiveness and Digital Transition, and Isabelle ROSABRUNETTO, Director General of the Department of External Relations and Cooperation.
As part of this mission, Aarti HOLLA-MAINI, Director of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs, was received on September 4 by Isabelle BERRO-AMADEÏ, Government Counselor – Minister of External Relations and Cooperation, accompanied by Ambassador Lorenzo RAVANO, Monaco’s Representative to the United Nations Office in Vienna.
On this occasion, the importance of a clear legal framework in line with international law was emphasized for the prosperity of a national space sector.
As space becomes accessible to an increasing number of public and private actors, the Principality aims to adopt national legislation to regulate private space activities conducted on Monegasque territory and ensure the State’s legal security in accordance with applicable international rules.

The Monaco Office for Outer Space Affairs was established by sovereign ordinance on August 2, 2021. It is led by Mr. Christophe Pierre and placed under the supervision of the Department of Platforms and Digital Resources within the Interministerial Delegation for Digital Transition.
