The European debut of Ryan Schneider<\/strong> is a bold and visceral event. Until November 23, 2025<\/strong>, the Citadelle \u2013 Centre d\u2019art & Mus\u00e9e<\/strong> in Villefranche-sur-Mer<\/strong> hosts the American artist\u2019s first solo exhibition in Europe: \u201cCeux qui nous guident\u201d<\/em> (Those Who Guide Us<\/em>), an immersive reflection on the relationship between the body, nature, technology, and ancestral memory.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Born in Indianapolis in 1980<\/strong> and now based in Joshua Tree, California<\/strong>, Schneider has developed a powerful visual language that blends painting, sculpture, and ritual. His works\u2014created using oil pigments applied with sticks<\/strong>\u2014stand out for their use of raw materials<\/strong> like wood and stone<\/strong> and for their shamanic, totemic energy.<\/p>\n

The exhibition features over 30 works<\/strong> installed throughout the gardens, courtyards, and interior spaces<\/strong> of the Citadelle, creating a dynamic dialogue between the historic architecture and Schneider\u2019s bold artistic vision. The show reveals two facets of his work: the brutal physicality<\/strong> of his sculptural process\u2014cutting, carving, incising, sometimes even \u201cattacking\u201d the material\u2014and his engagement with future technologies<\/strong>, through collaborations with a robotic sculptor<\/strong> that challenge the boundaries between man and machine.<\/p>\n

During his residency at the Citadelle<\/strong>, Schneider produced site-specific works<\/strong> that fuse his raw aesthetic with the spirit of the location. Curated by Camille Frasca<\/strong>, the exhibition leads visitors through a meditative, sensory experience<\/strong>, where the silence of the landscape meets the monumental visual power<\/strong> of the sculptures.<\/p>\n

Echoing German Expressionism<\/strong> and Native American mythology<\/strong>, Schneider\u2019s visual universe has already found its place in major collections, including the Palm Springs Museum of Art<\/strong>, the Xiao Museum of Contemporary Art<\/strong>, the Hall Art Foundation<\/strong>, and the Marquez Family Collection<\/strong>. His work has been featured in leading art publications such as Frieze<\/em>, The New Yorker<\/em>, Art in America<\/em>, and ArtForum<\/em>.<\/p>\n
