The Principality of Monaco will be one of the prestigious stages of the Olympic Flame’s journey, which will reach Paris on July 26 next.<\/p>\n
On June 18, at 2:15 pm, the Flame will depart from Port Hercule, carried by six torchbearers who will relay it to the Palace Square.<\/strong><\/p>\n This is the second passage of the Flame through Monaco since 1968, on the occasion of the Grenoble Winter Olympics.<\/p>\n H.S.H. Prince Albert II, president of the Monaco Olympic Committee, member of the International Olympic Committee since 1985, and president of the IOC’s Sustainability and Legacy Commission, has participated five times in the Winter Olympics as a member of Monaco’s bobsleigh team.<\/p>\n The Sovereign Prince carried the Olympic Flame for the first time in 1996 at the Atlanta Summer Olympics in the United States, then on nine other occasions at both Summer and Winter Games. H.S.H. Princess Charl\u00e8ne, also an Olympic athlete in swimming, represented Her country of origin, South Africa, in the 2000 Sydney Summer Olympics. H.S.H. the Prince has always been involved in the promotion of sports. Under His leadership, numerous initiatives have been undertaken to encourage the learning and practice of a discipline from a young age and to transmit the values of sport. His commitment is also notable within “Peace and Sport,” an organization under His High Patronage, which promotes peace through sport. Each year, He awards the S\u00f3crates Prize during the Ballon d’Or Ceremony, rewarding footballers engaged in social and charitable projects.<\/p>\n The Monaco Olympic Committee was created in 1907. Monaco first participated in the Summer Olympics in 1920 and hosted the Women’s Olympiad in 1921, a pioneering event that demonstrates the country’s unwavering support for the development of sport.<\/p>\n Monaco’s only medal was obtained in 1924 at the Paris Olympics by architect Julien M\u00e9decin in the “art and literature competitions” dear to Pierre de Coubertin.
